they first appeared in the episodes, with all subsequent revisits to
that place grouped together for the sake of tidiness. Timings given are based on the Blu-ray editions and all episode images are sourced from these discs. Please note that Blu-ray grabs have been
regraded to highlight details of the filming locations

"Driving to 'St. Ursula's Convent' "

Identified by:
Anthony McKay, March 2012 |
(07:49) The Mini seen on its journey to the so-called St
Ursula's Convent, driving it up Silver Hill near to the High
Canons junction.
Spotter's Note: Our
photographer went to this site suspecting that the original
camera position was a high angle one, shot through the canopy of
a tree. However, it became immediately apparent that it most
likely taken at ground level and cheated with someone dangling a
branch in front of the lens!

GRIM'S DYKE HOTEL
SOUTH LODGE ENTRANCE
OLD REDDING
HARROW WEALD
LONDON HA3
Identified by:
Anthony McKay and Annette Hill |
(08:26) Jeff drives the Mini into the entrance of what he
thinks is the convent.
Since Filming: The
Grim's Dyke South Lodge Entrance gateposts seen in You Can
Always Find A Fall Guy have been taken down and rebuilt at
least twice since filming. The gateposts standing in 1968 have long since gone
and a pair of sympathetic replacements survived until early 2012, but
by then were
in a poor state. They have been removed and faithful new replacements have
been built (though each is one course of bricks shorter.
Scandalous!).
The 2011 photograph shows how the capping on the
left gatepost had been dislodged, presumably having been struck
by a large vehicle delivering supplies to the hotel.
Coincidentally, even though this gatepost has now been
reconstructed, the capping had by 2023 again become displaced.
At the time of filming, it was the other way round - look
carefully at your Blu-rays and DVDs and you'll spot that, as the
Mini enters, the capping of the right-hand gatepost had received
a similar impact.
So as to allow a wider opening for
vehicles coming to and from Old Redding, the left-hand gatepost
has been placed much further away from the right-hand one (which
appears to have been situated where it had been previously). The
wrought iron gates are now purely for show and do not meet in
the centre.
The 2023 view demonstrates how the
road widening has altered the view and shows the very clear delineation between the
old road's tarmac and the newer extension. |

(28:09) Jeff arrives
back at WERC.
Since Filming: A
devastating fire broke out within the Grim's Dyke gatehouse in
the early hours of Tuesday 7th April 2020. The Fire Brigade was
called just after 5.00am and they had the fire under control
just over two hours later. The gatehouse (also known as the
South Lodge) - a Grade II listed building built in the late
1800s - had at that time been standing derelict and was not
inhabited. The cause of the fire was unknown, though the
possibility of arson was not ruled out. There were no injuries
reported.
The fire accounted for the roof
and much of the structure. Fortunately, a faithful reconstruction of the
building was possible, including the use of handmade clay tiles
from one of the few British producers that makes them to the
imperial size required. The work was completed in 2022. The
results of the rebuild are quite remarkable as evidenced by our
Now photo.
