Locations are presented in the order they first appeared in the episodes, with all subsequent revisits to that place grouped together for the sake of tidiness. Timings given are based on the Blu-ray editions and all episode images are sourced from these discs. Please note that Blu-ray grabs have been regraded to highlight details of the filming locations and are not representative of the actual look of the Blu-rays, which are graded appropriately.

Spotter's Note: The original shot was taken from the front garden of a house on the corner of Norfolk Road and Avenue Road. The garden is now considerably more verdant and it is impossible to shoot from the identical position.

UNDERGROUND CAR PARK
ELSTREE STUDIOS
SHENLEY ROAD
BOREHAMWOOD

Mike Richardson

(12:03) Sir Basil Duggan drives into the underground car park, where he has instructed Marty to meet him after the break-in.

THEN...

Image © ITV Studios, 1969

(12:05) Sir Basil reverses his car into a parking place.

Since Filming: When the Elstree Studios site was taken on by Elstree and Borehamwood Council in the 1990s, the car park needed £250,000 worth of remedial work to fix leaks and asbestos problems. Today it remains in use and still retains its appearance, familiar from so many ITC and ABPC programmes of the 60s and 70s.

Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) -
'When Did You Start To Stop Seeing Things?' and was used extensively in other ITC programming.

"Signalling the Ship"

(3A)
PERIMETER ROAD
ELSTREE STUDIOS
SHENLEY ROAD
BOREHAMWOOD
HERTFORDSHIRE WD6

Identified by:
Mike Richardson

(18:44) Parker - through the magic of nominative determinism - parks the communications van and extends the telescopic aerial. Using the equipment inside, he sends a Morse message to Captain Rashid aboard a ship at sea...

Spotter's Note: This appears to the south east corner of the perimeter road - and it's interesting to note that the small hilled area seems to have been undergoing landscaping at the time of filming. It is seen on several occasions in this condition doubling for the Spanish countryside in episodes of Department S.  The Elstree Studios backlot area is significantly changed since the 1960s, but some of the perimeter access road has survived.

Also appeared in:
Used extensively in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and other ITC programming.

"Hijacked!"

(4A)

SHARPLESHALL STREET

PRIMROSE HILL
LONDON NW1

Identified by:
Stephen Carter, September 2002

(24:23) Marty gets in the Mini, which has been parked near to the Randall and Hopkirk offices. He is just about to drive off for the Civil & Military Club when Jackson, concierge at the club, gets in and holds Marty at gunpoint. He is instructed to drive somewhere nice and quiet...

Spotter's Note: This location is sited at the Regent's Park Road end of Sharpleshall Street.

Since Filming: The pavement has been extended into Sharpleshall Street by approximately a car width, meaning that it now not possible to park where Marty did.

Also appeared in:
Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)

UNKNOWN ROAD (26b)

(26:12) Marty has indeed driven to somewhere quiet. On a leafy country road he slams his foot on the brake pedal. Jackson, taken unawares, flies forward and hits the windscreen. The impact knocks him unconscious. Marty then heads back to his and Jeannie's apartment.

Spotter's Note: This might possibly have been filmed in the Burnham Beeches area.

(39:31, 39:37) Brenan leaves for the Docks, and is followed by Marty.

Since Filming: The Elstree backlot area is much changed since the 1960s, not least due to the construction of a Tesco's superstore on 12 acres of former Elstree Studios land and there remains little that is recognisable.

"The London Docks"

(6A)

KING GEORGE V DOCK
POPLAR
LONDON E14

Identified by:
Anthony McKay

(39:51, 39:55) Establishing shots of the vessels moored at the London Docks.

(44:29, pictured) Establishing shot of the London Docks.

Spotter's Note: The King George V Dock, an enclosed upstream London dock, was built between 1912 and 1921 by the Port of London Authority. At 64 acres it was smaller than the other royal docks, but it could berth liners as large as the RMS Mauretania. It and the other London Royal docks fell into a steady decline as traffic moved downstream to Tilbury from the 1960s onwards, with closure coming in 1981. Redevelopment in the 1980s included the construction of London City Airport on the north bank of the dock. This was completed in 1987. King George V station on the London City Airport branch of the Docklands Light Railway opened in December 2005 and is named after the dock.

THEN...

Spotter's Note: When a large part of the Elstree Studios land was sold off to Tesco plc, the Scene Docks and plasterers' building were shortened at their south-western ends as they encroached into the land that had been sold off. The red line in the aerial view demonstrates the approximate 'cut line' through the studio buildings, with everything to the right of the line being demolished. Stage 5 was demolished in its entirety. The orange arrow denotes the approximate filming site.

(44:59) With his tongue firmly in cheek, Jeff implies that Marty sent for the cavalry.
