-
The track order differed across the two
formats. However, all ten tracks were present on
cassette and vinyl.
-
John Keating's arrangement of the theme
from The Persuaders! received 7" single
releases in Canada (Capitol Records, 72661, 1971) and
France (Columbia, 2C 006-05329, 1973). In both
instances, the Owen M.D. theme Sleepy Shores

-
The two tracks taken from the BBC TV series
Vendetta - A4 and B2 - were monoaural recordings whereas
all other tracks were presented in stereo.
-
The cassette cover shows some very obvious
paste up marks resulting from Roger Moore being cut out from
the background and pasted lower in the frame and closer to
Tony Curtis than in the square-format LP cover.

Notes |
-
The recording sessions for this collection took
place at Pye Studios, London, in January 1974.
-
More than half of the themes on this
collection were Tony Hatch compositions: Hadleigh,
Best in Football, Serenade of Love, The
Champions, Crossroads, Emmerdale Farm,
Man Alive, Memories of Summer and Sportsnight.
-
This collection was simultaneously released on
audio cassette (ZCP 41029),
8-track cartridge (Y8P 41029)
and vinyl LP (NSPL 41029).
-
'Eye Level', the theme to the Thames series
Van Der Valk, was incorrectly credited to "Tromhey".
This was a typesetting error and should have read "Trombey"
(Jack).
-
A 4-channel quadrophonic version of this album
was released on vinyl in Australia (Astor Records, QUAD 1025).

-
TV themes collection notable -
at least here! - for including John Barry's theme from The Adventurer.
-
Barry's theme to Anglia
Television's Orson Welles Great Mysteries is rather
reminiscent of his theme to The Adventurer.
Likewise, Tony Hatch's Man Alive theme exhibits
similarities to his theme for The Champions.
-
The running order on
this audio cassette differs from the vinyl record,
with Orson Welles Great Mysteries swapping
places with The Strauss Family. This means that
on the cassette the two John Barry tracks play
consecutively.

-
Online databases 45worlds and Discogs disagree
regarding the year of release of this title. The former places
it in 1974 - presumably based upon the latest track copyright
date listed on the packaging - whereas Discogs suggests it
hails from 1976, which appears to be accurate when other
titles with consecutive catalogue numbers are borne in mind.

50 Popular TV Themes was released
simultaneously by Pickwick Records on vinyl record
(50DA 315) and audio cassette (50DA 315).
-
The audio cassette edition of 50 Popular Themes
by The Bruce Baxter Orchestra was divided into two volumes,
each of approximately 40 minutes duration. These cassettes
were sold together as a set.
-
This collection was released in heavily
truncated form in Spain as 14 Popular TV Themes
(Olympo: vinyl LP L-605; audio cassette C-605). The only ITC series
that survived to be heard on the Spanish edition were The
Saint and The Persuaders! and The Protectors
('Avenues and Alleyways').

Notes |
-
Star Wars and Other
Space Themes contained three ITC-related theme
tunes - Thunderbirds, UFO and Space:
1999 - which is quite a decent representation
considering ITC's science fiction output was limited
to Gerry Anderson series such as these.
-
The cover artwork seemed
to be an exercise in copyright avoidance - depicting
Star Wars heroes who looked nothing like Luke
Skywalker or Princess Leia Organa and a USS Enterprise
which was somewhat pimped up!
-
An alternative version
with the same catalogue number was also issued. This
version had a cardboard cover that wrapped around the outside of
the plastic case:

in a standard
plastic audio cassette case with a cardboard outer

-
Interestingly, the
Belgian LP issue of this album (EMI Music for
Pleasure, 4M 024-62912 - see right) featured different
sleeve artwork and an alternative track listing -
dropping Blakes 7, the Love Theme from
Superman and Dick Barton and replacing them
with The Pink Panther, Jaws 2 and

Notes |
-
This appears to be the first
of two variant 1986 releases of this collection of
television themes. It seems that this one was intended for mail
order sale since it carried no EAN barcode. It was
issued simultanteously on vinyl record (MOMENT 105) and audio
cassette (MOMENT C105) formats.
-
There is some debate to
be had as to whether or not this 'mail order' release is titled Watching Music: Original TV Hits of
the Sixties - Collectors Edition as the LP sleeve
and audio cassette cover include the 'Watching Music' title.
The LP sleeve has these words in small print, only
marginally larger than the catalogue number, but the
cassette displays them in larger text on its cover.
Additionally, the cassette spine has 'Watching Music' in the same
weight and size of text as the rest of the title. This wording
does not appear on the alternative retail version. One
wonders if perhaps Original TV Hits of the Sixties
was intended as part of a Watching Music series
of releases. There appears to be no evidence of this
among other contemporary titles from Filmtrax.
-
Original TV Hits of
the Sixties - Collectors Edition was compiled by
Philip Masheter who was at the time a co-owner of 58
Dean Street Records, a small, independent record shop
based at that very address off Shaftesbury Avenue in
London's Soho district. From the 1970s until the very
early 2000s, the shop was a treasure trove for
enthusiasts of film and television soundtracks and
theatrical cast recordings.
-
Typo Watch: Danger
Man was erroneously listed as 'Dangerman' and
Department S as 'Dept. S'.

of two variant 1986 releases of this collection of
television themes. Unlike the other, this version carried an EAN barcode,
by then necessary for retail sale. It was distributed by BMG
and
issued simultaneously on vinyl record (MOMENT 105) and audio
cassette (MOMENT C105) formats, retaining the
catalogue number of the seemingly earlier edition. The
tracklisting is identical.
-
The 'Watching Music' element
of the title was completely dropped for this edition.
-
The appearance of this variant
version was heavily revamped, with the design duties
entrusted to Quadrata. The striking cover photograph was
supplied by Rolf Cornell SCL Ltd.
-
Typo Watch: Danger
Man and Department S were still erroneously
listed as 'Dangerman' and 'Dept. S' respectively,
although at least the latter was printed corrected on
the front cover.

Notes |
-
Performing with The Silver
Screen Orchestra on these recordings were singers Sheila Gott
and Steve Butler.
-
This collection was
simultaneously issued on CD (PWK 108) and audio
cassette (HSC 3263).
-
The choice of titles is
a little strange, since it represents a mix of
then-current and somewhat older titles that had been
out of circulation for a while, such as The
Adventures of Black Beauty, Follyfoot and
arguably the ITC Supermarionation series. Was the
collection aimed at children or their parents? Of
course, at this point the likes of Thunderbirds,
Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and Joe 90
were just a few years away from a major popular
revival... on the BBC!
-
Some online sources give
the release date of this collection as 1 January 1989,
but since this day was a Bank Holiday in the United
Kingdom this information is highly questionable. It
would seem likely that 01.01.1989 was entered in a
retailer database as the actual date in 1989 was
unknown, and this has been mistakenly interpreted as
an actual publication date.
-
The Yorkshire Television
children's series Follyfoot (1971-73) was
stated here as 'Follyfoot Farm'.

The Reactions removed for this edition.
-
The first of a series of TV themes releases,
this compilation and its sequels were bolder than many other
such collections in that all tracks were cover versions
performed by up-and-coming British indie bands.

sequence.

Notes |
-
As might be guessed from the track listing,
this themes compilation traded on the popularity of maverick
US film director Quention Tarantino and his films Reservoir
Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994), hence its
title. It did, however, include a smattering of television
themes including three ITC tunes.
-
This title was simultaneously released on audio
cassette (VTMC 59) and
compact disc (VTCD 59).
-
This is Cult Fiction was
also issued on CD in Australia, Sweden and the USA. While the
packaging design remained essentially the same as the UK
edition for all these international variants, the US version
went its own way with the track selection, omitting all three
ITC tracks along with many others, with some replaced by
America-friendly alternatives such as the Batman and
Charlie's Angels themes. In total, this edition comprised
just 17 tracks compared to the 28 of the Australian, British
and Swedish imprints. There appears not to have been an audio
cassette version offered in any of these territories.

Notes |
-
A follow-up collection to 1995's This is
Cult Fiction (Circa/Virgin, VTCD 59).
A single disc release, This is the Return of Cult Fiction
ploughed a similar furrow, bringing together a variety of film
and TV themes, this time only making the one stop-off in the
world of ITC to present the theme to Return of the Saint.
-
Switching to Zip Design for this
second release, this collection gave the impression that it
had more in common with the This is Easy range than its
predecessor.
-
This collection was
simultaneously released on compact disc (VTCD 112) and audio
cassette (VTMC 112).
-
The cassette cover was a
multi-fold J-card, printed on one side only.

Notes |
-
The Cult Files was
released simultaneously by Silva Screen on compact disc
(FILMXCD 184) and audio cassette (FILMC 184 1/2).
-
The distinctive packaging
for The Cult Files was designed by Colin Parker - Not
of this Earth at Silva Screen and the cover model was Reynaldo
Hatton. Hidden inside the booklet was a 'free' sticker
depicting a variation of the cover photograph with 'The Cult
Files' branded across Hatton's forehead.
-
The version of Batman was
an orchestration of the Danny Elfman composition for the 1989
feature film rather than the Neil Hefti theme of 1996.
Similarly, the Legend track was based on Jerry
Goldsmith's score for the film rather than the alternative -
and dare we say superior - Tangerine Dream soundtrack. But
let's get back to ITC...
-
Nearly all of Cassette 1 Side A was devoted to ITC themes, with a brief
snatch of The X-Files at the start and a 3 minute
interval for The Avengers. All ITC tracks were new or
alternative orchestrations except for The Persuaders!
which was a synthesised version by composer Mark Ayres.

Notes |
-
A great selection of tracks with a significant
number of ITC themes.
-
While the vast majority of themes featured are
original television versions, many (including Randall and
Hopkirk (Deceased), Sapphire and Steel and Jason
King) have been artificially and rather poorly extended
for this compilation.
-
The Baron theme even features an
international sponsor announcement: "The Baron is
brought to you by..."
-
This collection was simultaneously released on
audio cassette (VTDMC151) and compact disc (VTDCD151).
-
The covers of both editions carried errors in
that the Steve McQueen film Bullitt (1968) was given as
"Bullit". Likewise, both referred to the ATV series
Sapphire and Steel as "Sapphire & Steele" and omitted the
brackets from Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). How dare
they!

Notes |
-
The Cult Files Re-opened was
released simultaneously by Silva Screen on compact disc
(FILMXCD 191) and audio cassette (FILMC 191). The CDs were
encoded in Dolby Surround for compatible multi-channel
amplifiers but was designed to play in two-channel stereo on
standard equipment. The cassette was recorded in plain
2-channel stereo.
-
As with its predecessor The
Cult Files, the packaging
for The Cult Files Re-opened was designed by Colin Parker
and launched the cover star of the first release into space -
and 3D! The CD cover was printed with intentionally misregistered
colours, giving a 3D effect when viewed through the
cardboard-framed anaglyph red/blue 3D specs provided. The
cassette version came with a 2D print and no 3D glasses.
-
This release tied in with Future
Publishing's Cult TV magazine, which had launched with
a preview issue given away in the July 1997 edition of sister
title SFX and even sported a Cult Files sampler
CD in one issue. Copies of The Cult Files Re-opened
included a WHSmiths voucher entitling purchasers to £1 off the
cover price of a Cult TV issue which expired at the end
of March 1998. Sadly, the magazine didn't manage to gain a
sufficient circulation and its eleventh regular issue in June
1998 proved to be its last.

Notes |
-
A good selection of mostly official record
versions of a wide variety of 1960s television themes, topped
off with a fabulous photograph by Tony Gale of Peter Wyngarde
as Jason King surrounded by a bevy of beauties. Said beauties
are draped unconscious over his vintage car, presumably having
fainted, overcome by his animal magnetism!
Take a look at the full image here.
-
The majority of tracks included had previously
featured on Castle's 1993 Top TV Themes compilation.
-
A special bulletin from the Typo Police: the
front cover boasted the inclusion of the 'Wickers World'
theme, which should have been 'Whicker's
World'.
-
The
Man in a Suitcase theme was billed as 'A Man in a
Suitcase' (presumably the title registered by Ron Grainer's
publishers) and was additionally noted as the theme from
Channel 4's 1990s music and entertainment programme TFI
Friday.
-
Let's say it again: the Cyril Stapleton
arrangement of the Department S theme is to die for...
-
This collection was simultaneously released on
audio cassette (SELMC 561) and CD (SELCD 561).

Notes |
-
Favourite TV Memories was just
one release in Reader's Digest's Sounds of the
Sixties range of CDs and cassettes. These
comprised volumes for each year of the decade and
various additional themed releases such as this one.
-
The cover design features actor David
Janssen, famous in the 1960s as the star of US
television drama The Fugitive, actress Joan
Sims, the much loved Carry On films regular,
and the notorious media personality and disc jockey
Jimmy Savile. Following his death in 2011, hundreds of
allegations of sexual misconduct were made and Savile
is now recognised as having been a prolific and
predatory sex offender over a period of several
decades. Of course, when Reader's Digest produced
Favourite TV Memories, Savile's crimes had not at
that point come to light.
-
This collection was simultaneously
released on audio cassette (RDC94751
/ RDC 94752 / RDC 94753) and
compact disc (RDCD3081-3).
It was a mail-order exclusive, hence the lack of an
EAN barcode.
