Notes |
-
Although generally credited as being a Marble
Arch release - and backed up by the MACCD 152 catalogue number
- there is no mention of this company on the disc or the
accompanying printed materials - just Castle Communications
plc.
-
The greater majority of these tracks would
later reappear on TrueTrax's Timeless TV Themes (1994)
and Castle's Classic Sixties
TV Themes (1999).
-
The words 'Top TV Themes' on the front cover
were print-finished in red foil. As foil is notoriously difficult to
scan (it generally shows in black), we have approximated the
appearance this cover.
-
This collection was simultaneously released on
audio cassette (MACMC 152) and CD (MACCD 152).

A compact disc compiling a great many
television themes composed, arranged and conducted by Ron
Grainer. In addition, three tracks are included which were not
composed by Grainer but arranged and conducted by him - A
Touch of Velvet, A Sting of Brass by Mark Wirtz, Joe 90
by Barry Gray and Rebecca by Claude Debussy.
-
Many titles were original versions, including
Man in a Suitcase, but The Prisoner was a rather strange
'first version'.
-
The playing time shown on the back cover (80
minutes 33 seconds) was incorrect as the disc ran in actuality
to 79:33.

Notes |
-
A significant number of these tracks had
previously appeared on Top TV Themes (1993) and this
track listing would become increasingly familiar on various
Castle Communications-licensed CDs and cassettes in the years subsequent.
-
A common error is made here, referring to
Man in a Suitcase as 'A Man in a Suitcase' - and is that
really meant to be McGill on the cover?
-
This collection was simultaneously released on

title. It did, however, include a smattering of television
themes including three ITC tunes.

Notes |
-
A follow-up collection to 1995's This is
Cult Fiction (Circa/Virgin, VTCD 59).
A single disc release, This is the Return of Cult Fiction
ploughed a similar furrow, bringing together a variety of film
and TV themes, this time only making the one stop-off in the
world of ITC to present the theme to Return of the Saint.
-
Switching to Zip Design for this
second release, this collection gave the impression that it
had more in common with the This is Easy range than its
predecessor.

Hatton. Hidden inside the booklet was a 'free' sticker
depicting a variation of the cover photograph with 'The Cult
Files' branded across Hatton's forehead.
-
The version of Batman was
an orchestration of the Danny Elfman composition for the 1989
feature film rather than the Neil Hefti theme of 1996.
Similarly, the Legend track was based on Jerry
Goldsmith's score for the film rather than the alternative -
and dare we say superior - Tangerine Dream soundtrack. But
let's get back to ITC...
-
Approximately the first 20
minutes of Disc 1 was devoted to ITC themes, with a brief
snatch of The X-Files beforehand and a 3 minute
interval for The Avengers. All ITC tracks were new or
alternative orchestrations except for The Persuaders!
which was a synthesised version by composer Mark Ayres.

Reissued, retitled version of Doctor Who &
Other Classic Ron Grainer Themes released in 1994
(catalogue number PLAY 008). This new edition boasted a cover
photograph of Richard Bradford as McGill from Man in a
Suitcase, but aside from minor alterations to the booklet
layout, this new version was otherwise identical, even down to
the catalogue number and barcode.
-
The playing time on the back cover was
corrected to state the actual running time of the CD (though
still two seconds out at 79 minutes 35 seconds).
-
The booklet included a centre page
advertisement for ITC VHS videos which were now offered by PolyGram
following their purchase of the company:

Notes |
-
A great selection of tracks with a significant
number of ITC themes.
-
This collection was simultaneously released on
audio cassette (VTDMC151) and compact disc (VTDCD151).
-
The covers of both editions carried errors in
that the Steve McQueen film Bullitt (1968) was given as
"Bullit". Likewise, both referred to the ATV series
Sapphire and Steel as "Sapphire & Steele" and omitted the
brackets from Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). How dare
they!

Notes |
-
A compilation of John Barry themes from
film and television which was initially released on
compact disc in limited edition digipak packaging (488582
9) with a standard jewel case
version (488582 2)
following shortly afterwards.
-
In addition to the CD releases, a
double-album 180g heavyweight vinyl LP version was later issued in
April 1998 in association with
audiophile record label Simply Vinyl (SVLP 0029).
-
Liner notes in all three editions were
provided by television personality Jonathan Ross.
-
Although John Barry composed themes for two
ITC series, only his Persuaders! composition was
included in this compilation, with The Adventurer
theme being unfortunately overlooked.
-
In 1999, Columbia reissued the tracks in
this compilation sourced from feature films, along with
other Barry compositions for the silver screen, as The
Music of John Barry (494507 2). As a television theme,
The Persuaders! was not included.

Notes |
-
The Cult Files Re-opened was
released simultaneously by Silva Screen on compact disc
(FILMXCD 191) and audio cassette (FILMC 191). The CDs were
encoded in Dolby Surround for compatible multi-channel
amplifiers but was designed to play in two-channel stereo on
standard equipment.
-
As with its predecessor The
Cult Files, the packaging
for The Cult Files Re-opened was designed by Colin Parker
and launched the cover star of the first release into space -
and 3D! The cover was printed with intentionally misregistered
colours, giving a 3D effect when viewed through the
cardboard-framed anaglyph red/blue 3D specs provided with the
CD.
-
This release tied in with Future
Publishing's Cult TV magazine, which had launched with
a preview issue given away in the July 1997 edition of sister
title SFX and even sported a Cult Files sampler
CD in one issue. Copies of The Cult Files Re-opened
included a WHSmiths voucher entitling purchasers to Ł1 off the
cover price of a Cult TV issue which expired at the end
of March 1998. Sadly, the magazine didn't manage to gain a
sufficient circulation and its eleventh regular issue in June
1998 proved to be its last.

Notes |
-
As with previous releases in this range,
Cult Themes from the 70's: Volume One showcased the
talents of up-and-coming British indie bands.
-
An interesting exception were The Lambrettas, a
group tempted out of retirement to record for the project.
They had met with success during the late 1970s Mod revival
with singles Poison Ivy and Dance. Their
contribution - a version of the Starsky and Hutch theme
- is one of the standout tracks on the collection.
-
All tracks produced by Russell Writer.

Notes |
-
A couple of the less over-exposed ITC themes
appeared on this collection, namely those for Jason King
and Shirley's World ('Shirley's Theme').
-
The collection is notable for
including four themes to Barbara Cartland TV romances made not
by ITC but by The Grade Company / Gainsborough Pictures in the
years following Sir Lew Grade's association with ATV/ITC.
These are tracks 11 to 14 - The Lady and the Highwayman,
A Hazard of Hearts, A Duel of Hearts and A Ghost
in Monte Carlo (though disappointingly the latter did not
concern Marty Hopkirk's return visit to Monte Carlo!).

Notes |
-
A CD for those who enjoy hearing non-official
versions of television themes. These arrangements are all
performed by The London Theatre Orchestra and are generally
decent. Occasionally it does sound as if it's not a
particularly big orchestra!
-
This is a good selection for ITC fans with
renditions included of the themes to Randall and Hopkirk
(Deceased), Space: 1999, The Persuaders!,
Thunderbirds, The Champions and The Prisoner.
-
Of the ITC themes included, The Prisoner
is particularly noteworthy for its thunder and sports car
sound effects and is particularly energetic - even if purists
might grit their teeth a bit throughout!
-
Not ITC, but worth noting that The Avengers
theme is actually the theme to The New Avengers.

|
Notes |
-
Despite this collection going out under the
name of a rival ABPC TV series, it features a good number of
ITC themes.
-
The inclusion of Man in a Suitcase in
this compilation was as much for its then recent reuse as the
theme of Channel 4's TFI Friday as for its original
use.
-
Cyril Stapleton's arrangement of Edwin Astley's
The Saint theme proves to be an interesting diversion
from the standard theme. Meanwhile his version of
Department S is comparatively faithful and really rather
fabulous.
-
The CD insert folded out into a 35.5cm x 24cm
double-sided sheet containing, on one side, a tracklisting
surrounded by items of merchandise, and on the other, liner
notes by author Michael Richardson.
-
Early copies of this CD set carried an error in
that track B18 by Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen was not 'Crane
(Casablanca)' as advertised, but its 1963 single B-side
'Hazelmere'. This mistake was corrected for the second
pressing.

Notes |
-
This compilation was a repackaged reissue of a
1997 Kaz Records / Castle Communications plc / Pulse compact
disc that carried the same title, catalogue number and barcode
and identical disc content.
-
As with many of these Castle releases, a large
number of tracks were common to each title, and it is notable
that they released two CDs in 1999 that had 15 tracks in
common: this one and Classic Sixties TV Themes.

-
Some of the tracks included in
this budget price compilation were uncredited
but were versions familiar to the seasoned TV themes collector.
-
A familiar and frustrating error
with the Man in a Suitcase theme reoccurs here where it
is again stated as 'A Man in a Suitcase' on the packaging. As
with other collections of the era, it is again noted as the
theme from Friday evening entertainment show TFI Friday.

Notes |
-
CD reissue of two classic easy listening albums
from 1972 and 1967 respectively.
-
As many of the tracks on the Alan Hawkshaw LP
were presented as medleys, the CD was divided into just 13
tracks despite containing 27 themes.
-
Both are well-liked albums, but the Brian Fahey
Time for T.V. LP ranks among the very best television
themes compilations ever released. Coming in at a shade over
half an hour's duration, the theme arrangements manage to
sound authentic but are each given a twist to ease their
transition to their extended stereo versions.
-
This CD set included a four page booklet with
liner notes by Edwin Pouncey.

Notes |
-
The Prisoner theme on
this collection is the 1967 Ron Grainer single version.
However it ends with an early fade for no readily apparent
reason.
-
Additionally, The
Prisoner appears third in the
running order on the disc, despite back cover track listing
and booklet suggesting it ought to run fourth. It swaps
positions with The Man from U.N.C.L.E. on the disc. The
running order shown above follows that of the actual disc.

Notes |
-
Slim pickings for ITC fans on this one, but
we've included it here to highlight its inclusion of an
excellent cover version of The Saint by The Les Reed
Brass and an energetic cover of The Adventures of Robin
Hood. Otherwise, there are five Gerry/Sylvia Anderson
tracks to sate the appetite of the ITC listener, although none are
rarities.
-
Sequel Records allocated just a single disc for
this second volume of 1960s themes, bucking the trend set by
their other releases.
-
The CD insert folded out into a 35.5cm x 24cm
double-sided sheet containing, on one side, a tracklisting
surrounded by items of merchandise, and on the other, liner

Notes |
-
The tease of having The Persuaders! in
the CD title ultimately fails to deliver for the ITC fan, with
only Return of the Saint and The Adventures of
Rupert Bear also featuring.
-
John Barry's The Persuaders! theme is
represented here in a cover version by Cyril Stapleton and his
Orchestra. Stapleton's arrangement is pleasant, very 'easy
listening', and varies wildly from John Barry's original.
-
The Saint Orchestra's rendition of Return of
the Saint is the single record version and essentially an
extended version of the television original.
-
The CD insert folded out into a 35.5cm x 24cm
double-sided sheet containing, on one side, a tracklisting
surrounded by items of merchandise, and on the other, liner
notes by author Michael Richardson.

25. 'On the Ball' (World
Cup TV Theme) - The John Schroeder Orchestra |
Notes |
-
A good (but terribly familiar) selection of mostly official record
versions of a wide variety of 1960s television themes, topped
off with a fabulous photograph by Tony Gale of Peter Wyngarde
as Jason King surrounded by a bevy of beauties. Said beauties
are draped unconscious over his vintage car, presumably having
fainted, overcome by his animal magnetism!
Take a look at the full image here.
-
This CD came with a two-fold booklet sheet
including liner notes by Michael Richardson.
-
The majority of tracks included had previously
featured on Castle's 1993 Top TV Themes compilation.
-
Perhaps confusingly, this release was billed as
'Classic Sixties TV Themes' on the front cover and 'Classic
60s' Cult TV Themes' on the spine and back cover inlay.
-
A special bulletin from the Typo Police: the
front cover boasted the inclusion of tracks 'A Man In A
Suitcase' and 'Wickers World'. The first error will be obvious
to ITC fans, while the second should have been 'Whicker's
World'.
-
In addition to being subject to a typo (gaining
an 'A'), the
Man in a Suitcase theme was also noted ed as the theme from
Channel 4's 1990s music and entertainment programme TFI
Friday, most obviously not a Sixties Classic TV show...
-
Let's say it again: the Cyril Stapleton
arrangement of the Department S theme is to die for...
-
This collection was simultaneously released on
audio cassette (SELMC 561) and CD (SELCD 561).

Notes |
-
Released on the same day as
Castle Select's Classic Sixties TV Themes this
compilation shared an
unforgiveable 8 of its 18 tracks with its sister title.
-
On the plus side, TV Themes of
the 60s does include a rare run out for the theme to The
Spies, a BBC series from 1966 that starred Simon Oates,
Dinsdale Landen and Peter Dyneley, the voice of
Thunderbirds' Jeff Tracy.

Russell Writer.
-
As with previous volumes
in this series from Future Legend Records, all tracks in
this compilation were cover versions performed by
up-and-coming British indie bands.
-
Two bands were an
exception to this rule: The Honeycombs and Glenda
Collins, both former recording artists who had worked
with legendary producer Joe Meek. Their recordings for
this collection were the first in 30 years for both
acts.
-
Unlike its Themes from
the 1960s predecessors, this collection was released
on a single format - compact disc.

Notes |
-
A promotional CD given away to publicise the G
Plus (Granada Plus) TV channel, with the theme tunes hailing
from series that were running on the channel. In fact, the
same CD was issued twice in 1999 with different cover designs,
both of which are shown above. On body artwork on the actual
discs in both versions noted the title as 'G Plus - Home of
the Hits', but one of the two cover designs stated it as 'G
Plus - Home of TV Hits' instead.
-
As a promotional item, neither edition of this CD
carried an EAN.
-
The CD had ROM content comprising a Benny Hill
screensaver. If something had been available in the 1970s and
80s which saved TV screens from Benny Hill, it would have sold
like hot cakes...

Notes |
-
A rare run-out for Philip
Green's Ghost Squad theme along with the more
familiar Tony Hatch theme to The Champions as part of a
retrospective of Hatch's career. Divided into three distinct
discs each focusing on an aspect of the composer's career -
orchestra, songs and television themes - this makes for an
entertaining collection.
-
Track C11 - the theme from
Who-Dun-It - should not be confused with the 1972-78
Thames Television series Whodunnit? hosted most
famously by the actor and entertainer Jon Pertwee. The track
in question hails from a 1969 ATV drama anthology series
with the accent on murder. It was created by Lewis Greifer
and Tony Hatch composed its signature tune. Coincidentally,
the single release of The Champions on 7" vinyl saw
it paired on the disc with this theme.

Notes |
-
This CD came with a two-fold booklet sheet
including liner notes by Michael Heatley.
-
The most recognisable element of the CD's
striking cover design depicted Uma Thurman as the movie Emma
Peel. When this CD was published, it had been six years since
the release of The Avengers feature film starring
Thurman and Ralph Fiennes. Considering the film's poor
reputation following studio intervention in the
post-production process, it seems an odd choice.

Notes |
-
Based on a 33⅓rpm
vinyl 'Mini-Album' EP published in 1967 by Century 21 Records,
this replica compact disc edition was produced by the
Fanderson fan club in 2007, exclusively for purchase by its
members. It was part of Century 21 Mini-Albums: Set 4,
a three CD set. The other titles in the set were episode
soundtrack adaptations Introducing Captain Scarlet
(MA131) and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (MA132).
-
As the numbering implies, Fanderson have
released many more - indeed the vast majority - of the 1960s
Century 21 mini-albums in collectable replica packaging.
-
During the restoration process, Fanderson
uncovered the multi-track masters for several tracks on TV
Themes from Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and were able
to produce new stereo mixes that were included as bonus
tracks.
-
All tracks were recorded by the Barry Gray
Orchestra, with The Monkees and Man in a Suitcase
themes therefore presented as cover versions.

Notes |
-
A very welcome collection of
Laurie Johnson's music for The Professionals but slim
pickings for the ITC obsessive, with a solitary qualifying
track in three compact discs... To be honest, we loved the
suite of music from The First Men in the Moon too!
-
As the title implies, there
was indeed a Volume 1 release which focused on the music
that Laurie had composed for ABPC's The Avengers
(Edsel / The Demon Music Group Ltd, EDSD 2017, released 1
October 2007), but as the collection features no ITC
recordings we don't cover it here.

Notes |
-
A great collection of
Laurie Johnson's music for The New Avengers but - as
with Volume 2 - slim
pickings for the ITC obsessive, with a solitary qualifying
track in three compact discs... Even as a fan of The New
Avengers, you would likely feel aggrieved at having to
buy two discs of mostly unwanted material to own a single
disc of New Avengers music...
-
The collection is notable for
including four themes to Barbara Cartland TV romances made
not by ITC but by The Grade Company / Gainsborough Pictures
in the years following Sir Lew Grade's association with
ATV/ITC. These are tracks C5 to C8 - A Hazard of Hearts,
The Lady and the Highwayman, A Duel of Hearts and
A Ghost in Monte Carlo (though disappointingly the
latter did not concern Marty Hopkirk's return visit to Monte
Carlo!).
-
This was the last of three
volumes which primarily focused respectively on Laurie
Johnson's music for The Avengers, The
Professionals and The New Avengers.

that series.

Dance to the TV Themes (sT285, 1963). The compilation
was superbly remastered from the original master tapes by
Michael J Dutton.
-
This CD came with an eight page
booklet comprising Steve Race's notes that accompanied the
original vinyl LP releases.
-
The solitary ITC track on this
compilation was Henry Mancini's Man of the World theme,
a welcome outing for this rarely heard track.

Notes |
-
This compilation CD leans heavily towards
themes from American television, but somehow three ITC themes
sneaked their way in...
-
The version of Danger Man included here
was actually the end titles theme rather than the Red Price
Combo record version favoured by most TV themes compilations.
-
The CD purchased when researching this section
proved to be a manufactured-on-demand CD-R disc.
