pattern on VHS. Subsequent DVDs would include four

bought on VHS that DVD represented better value.

Notes |
-
Curiously, this Series 1
release contains the 39 episodes that originally formed
Series 1 and 2. These were produced as two distinct series
of 26 and 13 episodes and were initially marketed as
Series 1 and 2. The following 32 monochrome episodes were
then produced as Series 2 and the previous 39 episodes
were at that point rebranded Series 1 for worldwide
distribution.

Notes |
-
This DD Home Entertainment DVD Saint
set has to go down as one of the laziest efforts ever in
packaging an ITC series in the home entertainment age. The
design itself is competent and attractive but each DVD
cover is identical bar the text. Even the 'episode photos'
are the same for each volume. Additionally, the outer box
only has the episode titles printed on it, with no photos
or description. There is also a careless typo here: "The
Brunco Artists", which had been correct on the
previous edition.
-
This was licensed to DD Home
Entertainment for mail order sale, and was not available
through high street shops or online retailers (other than
themselves). Unusually, despite the DDHE catalogue number,
the packaging carries no mention of this company Instead,
branding on the outer
box is "ITV DVD " and the inner sleeves
instead credit Carlton Visual Entertainment Ltd
Presumably this was licensed to DD Home Entertainment at
around the time that Carlton was acquired by Granada
Ventures, who insisted on changes only to the outer box.
-
The sleeve for Volume 10
lists four episodes, but the disc actually contains five -
the title missed being for episode 39, The High Fence.

|
Notes |
-
The Vendetta from the Saint
and The Fiction Makers feature films were the first Saint
programmes released on home video and saw several reissues on
VHS before a single as-broadcast episode was released in a
similar fashion. The original two-part episodic versions of
these two Saint movies had been out of circulation
since their original TV transmissions, and were transferred
from their original film elements especially for this set,
with both these and the feature edits included.
-
The episodes on this set were PAL Transform
Decoded at BBC Resources to remove cross-colour interference
caused by the conversion from analogue videotape to digital.
Network's was the only colour Saint set to benefit from
this process.
-
The Saint and the Uncritical
Publisher, was a Leslie Charteris short story first
published in the November 12 1933 issue of Empire News,
a British Sunday newspaper, as The Smashing of Another
Racket. Charteris wrote 25 short stories for Empire News,
and collected 14 of these, including the short story in
question, for publication in book form as Boodle - Stories
of the Saint (Hodder and Stoughton, 1934). However, Hodder
and Stoughton got cold feet about the retitled The Saint
and the Uncritical Publisher and omitted it from the UK
version, reportedly as they felt it reflected badly upon the
publishing industry. A few months later, it was issued along
with the other 13 short stories by US publisher Doubleday, who
retitled the collection The Saint Intervenes. Despite
this, it was never included in British reissues (which after
the first edition adopted its more 'saintly' title). However,
it was included in a November 1960 edition of The Saint
Mystery Magazine, and saw a reprint by The Saint Club in
1995, prior to being rescued again from relative obscurity
when Network published it in booklet form in this DVD set.
-
Part of the proceeds of this
release (6 per cent - about £1.70 per unit) was donatedy to
support the Heaven’s Angels campaign, a major initiative
addressing the issue of healthcare delivery in sub–Saharan
Africa. Backed by Richard Branson’s charity foundation Virgin
Unite, the Heaven’s Angels campaign intended to raise funds to
provide a force of trained health workers on motorbikes to
transport vital medicine and prevention to remote rural
communities. At the time, it was estimated that over 10,000
people would die from treatable and preventable diseases such
as HIV/Aids, TB and Malaria in this region. Costing five
thousand pounds for the first year of operation each bike
would reach more than ten thousand people. Network and a range
of affiliated companies aimed to fund the recruitment of local
health workers and the purchase of the new motor bikes which
deliver the medicines – with the goal of providing at least
one hundred bikes – a practical solution to the above diseases
- by November 2006.

Notes |
-
This repackaged edition came in
a Scanavo 'fatpack' plastic case and did not include any of
the three booklets from the 2006 edition - despite Network's
own website suggesting that it did.
-
Unusually, this reissue carried
the same product number and barcode - 7952455 / 5 027626
245542 - as the 2006 version. This led to it not being listed
as a new edition retailer websites including
Amazon. It has also made it difficult for us to determine a
release date beyond '2019'.
