-
Recorded on Wednesday 4th April 1979
at the Royal Hibernian Hotel in Dublin, this
interview is one of a very small number that Patrick
McGoohan gave in which he talked at length about
The Prisoner.
-
At the time of the interview,
McGoohan was in Ireland to film Michael Dryhurst's The Hard Way (1980).
-
The interview was initially released
on audio cassette in 1981. This version was edited
in two places and when Roger Goodman reissued it on
CD in 2oo2 the excised material was reinstated.

Further details about the interview

This 3-disc set was marketed in
DVD packaging and came with a booklet that reproduced
Prisoner music editor Eric Mival's Prisoner Music
Bible.
-
All music on this collection
was mistakenly remastered at an incorrect speed, 4% faster
than the film's framerate of 24 frames per second.
Coincidentally - but unintentionally - this matched the 25
frames per second framerate of British television
transmissions of the series. This was corrected for the
later remastered reissue.

Notes |
-
This 3-CD set brought together
all the Chappell Music Library pre-recorded cues heard on the
soundtrack of The Prisoner.
-
A handful of other
pre-recorded, non-Chappell tracks, including Carmen
Miranda's I, Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi (I Like You Very Much),
were not included as they were deemed too costly to licence
and were available on other commercial releases - which was generally
not the case with the Chappell tracks.
-
Several cues had previously
seen release on another fan-produced
compilation, Space Adventures, a collection of Chappell library tracks used in 1960s Doctor Who.
This was released on audio cassette (RDMP1, 1987) and
compact disc (JPD 2CD, 1998).
-
The Complete Chappell
Recorded Library Cues set was officially licensed by The
Chappell Recorded Music Library, a subsidiary of Universal
Publishing Production Music.
-
Library cues, as the term
implies, were not specially composed for The Prisoner
and were available to licence for use in television,
film and radio productions. As such, listeners might
possibly recognise cues from other 1960s series.
-
The set was marketed exclusively
online with orders invited via email and The Unmutual
website. It was not sold through any shop.
-
A limited edition of 1,000
units was produced and each copy was
individually numbered.
-
The three discs were numbered 1, 2
and 6 in a homage to The Prisoner's most prominent
protagonists.
-
The set included a 56-page
booklet that sported an introduction written by The
Prisoner music editor Eric Mival, plus track-by-track
information about the disc contents. It also contained
writing by Roger Langley, Rick Davy and publisher Derek
Lawton.
-
Much like the first wave of
Network ITC soundtracks, The Complete Chappell Recorded
Library Cues set was issued in a DVD-style plastic case.
-
The back cover carried several unfortunate typos,
most notably the mispelling Eric Mival's surname as
'Marvel'.
-
The discs in this set were
proper pressed discs as opposed to recordable media, and
were professionally replicated.
-
The majority of the content of The Complete Chappell Recorded
Library Cues was later incorporated into Network's 50th
Anniversary Prisoner releases.

Background |
Everyman – the
brainchild of writer, actor and illustrator Brian Gorman
– was first performed as a one-man stage play in
Manchester in 2012.
“The Prisoner was such a personal project for
McGoohan, and I decided that merging the man and the
character (Number Six), in a Prisoner-esque setting,
examining how his life was the template for his greatest
work, should make for an entertaining and thoughtful
stage play.”
BRIAN GORMAN
The play ran to
excellent reviews, before moving to Chester, Leeds and
Liverpool, and has also been performed on several
occasions at Portmeirion, where The Prisoner was
originally filmed.
In 2016, Everyman was adapted as a graphic novel,
which was re-imagined by Invisible Six in 2017.
“Once the stage play proved successful, the next
natural step was to adapt it into a graphic novel. In
the book I was able to depict all the many characters
McGoohan met.”
In March 2017, Everyman was released by Quoit
Media as an audio drama. |

Notes |
-
This 6-CD set brought together
the content of the two previous soundtrack releases The
Prisoner Original Soundtrack (Network, 2007) and The
Prisoner: The Complete Chappell
Recorded Library Cues (Derek Lawton, 2010), reordering
the tracks to make a cohesive (almost) full soundtrack to
The Prisoner.
-
A handful of non-Chappell tracks, including Carmen
Miranda's I, Yi, Yi, Yi, Yi (I Like You Very Much),
were not included as they were deemed too costly to licence
and were available on other commercial releases - which was generally
not the case with the Chappell tracks. A small number of
tracks from The Complete Chappell
Recorded Library Cues were omitted, including All You
Need is Love by The Bootleg Beatles. However, several
library tracks that featured in the original edits of
Arrival and The Chimes of Big Ben were added to
the line up.
-
Network's Original
Soundtrack & Library Music Remastered CD set was also
included - with slightly different packaging and no
individual barcode - in the company's lavish 'Village
Editions' Blu-ray-CD-Book boxed set released on 29th
September 2017 to celebrate The Prisoner's 50th
Anniversary.
-
Disc 1, with a total running
time of 82:56, was really pushing the boundaries of what it
was physically possible to fit on a compact disc.
-
The set included a 48-page
Programme Notes book written by Andrew Pixley.

Notes |
-
In September 1990, Patrick McGoohan
was invited back to the United Kingdom to attend the
launch at Birmingham’s NEC of the new Prisoner
edition Caterham Seven car.
-
McGoohan had famously driven this
vehicle (then a product of Lotus) in The Prisoner,
and as part of his NEC appearance he was presented
with one of the new models. He also agreed to be
interviewed about the series.
-
With instructions that the interview
and recording could be used in any way provided it
was not used or released by any fan club for The
Prisoner, journalist Howard Foy conducted an
in-depth interview with Patrick for the debut issue
of The Box magazine (which also appeared as
Primetime Magazine issue 16).
-
Laying dormant on dictaphone cassette
tape for more than 25 years, the recording was
restored by legendary sound man Mark Ayres (Doctor
Who) and was released on this CD for the first
time in any format.
