Special Features
  • As per individual volumes. No additional content.

Notes
  • This boxset, released simultaneously with the individual volumes, marked the debut of The Prisoner on DVD.

  • This release was lauded as 'Digitally Restored', but the reality was not quite what the term promised, as the restoration was done in real-time (three Archangel passes, reputedly) rather than it being a frame-by-frame clean-up. Consequently pictures were somewhat soft and smeary.

Notes
  • On Sunday 7 August 2005, Peter Graham Scott (Director: The Prisoner and Danger Man), Eric Mival (Music Editor: The Prisoner), John S. Smith (Film Editor: The Prisoner) and Robert Fairclough (TV Historian and Author) joined a sell-out crowd at Portmeirion's Hercules Hall for a celebration of Patrick McGoohan, Danger Man, The Prisoner and Portmeirion, in aid of Ty Gobaith Children's Hospice in North Wales.

  • The 2-hour PM 2005 DVD featured highlights from the event, including in-depth interviews with the guests, a report on The Lego Village, highlights from the Portmeirion guided tour, guest press call, and additional unseen candid interview footage.

  • Despite the packaging noting the disc as DVD-R format, the disc inside was in fact a proper pressed DVD.

  • The DVD played without a menu screen.

  • Don’t Knock Yourself Out - an exclusive, feature-length documentary about the production of The Prisoner, told by those involved in its creation through a combination of archive and newly-filmed interviews with nearly 40 people, including Annette Andrι, Bernard Williams, David Tomblin, Derren Nesbitt, Peter Wyngarde, Anton Rodgers, Michael Grade, George Baker and Peter Bowles.

  • Audio Commentaries - Arrival with Bernie Williams and Tony Sloman, The Chimes of Big Ben with Vincent Tilsley, The Schizoid Man with Pat Jackson, The General with Peter Graham Scott, Dance of the Dead with Bernie Williams, Tony Sloman and John S. Smith, A Change of Mind with Roger Parkes and Fall Out with Eric Mival and Noreen Ackland.

  • Arrival and The Chimes of Big Ben (Original Edits) - the original edit of Arrival in a brand new digital restoration from the original 35mm film elements, along with a music-only soundtrack featuring Wilfred Josephs’ complete and abandoned score. Also included is the previously-available original edit of The Chimes of Big Ben.

  • Arrival Original Edit Restoration - a featurette using split-screen to demonstrate the scale of restoration required for this episode.

  • Trailers - digitally restored trailers for all seventeen episodes and two generic trailers.

  • Production Paperwork Archive - original scripts for each episode are included on Discs 1-6 and Disc 7 contains some original production documentation, press releases and other memorabilia.  This unique collection was sourced from the personal archives of Tony Sloman, Steven Ricks and Simon Coward and was reproduced with their permission and assistance.

  • Image Archive - individual galleries of over 1200 stills, with episodic ones appearing on Discs 1-6 and Disc 7 featuring generic/publicity photos, coverage of the original Press Conference in 1967 and Jack Shampan’s designs. Also included on Disc 6, courtesy of the Steven Ricks Collection, is a series of Exposure Strips produced originally by the film labs when prepping rushes. As well as showing a number of clapperboards and other key items of interest they also detail the filming of some scenes that were omitted from the finished episodes.

  • Commercial Break Bumpers.

  • Dolby 5.1 Audio Mix - each of the seventeen episodes can be listened to in either original Mono or Dolby 5.1 remix.

Notes

  • This release was a total game changer for ITC releases, let alone for The Prisoner, as it was the first to benefit from a ground up restoration from the original film elements using modern hardware and software. The results, while later improved upon by the Network and ViaVision Blu-rays - notably in respect of the soundtracks which had a few issues on this DVD set - were night and day improvements over what had been available to buy previously. It would be no exaggeration to say that The Prisoner had never looked better, not even on its original transmission.

  • The release date given above is in fact the date of Network's announcement - it is unclear what the actual release date was. The date at Network's website is 13 November 2007, but this is the date when the pre-order was added to the inventory, so not the release date.

The film features interviews with Catherine McGoohan, rare archive footage and never-before-seen interview sessions with McGoohan himself.

  • The Prisoner - An Illustrated History (Hardcover Book) - Andrew Pixley’s updated history of the series illustrated with rare and never-before-published photographs.

  • Original Soundtrack and Library Music Remastered (6 CD set) - this release brings together all of the specially-composed music and library tracks in one collection for the first time, along with many alternate and unused takes.

  • Portmeirion 1939 - recently discovered 16mm Kodachrome amateur footage of Portmeirion showing the early days of its development, circa 1939.

  • Pathe News: Beauty and the Beast - Pathe News' initial visit to Portmeirion in 1939 presents the first opportunity to give the village mass exposure via Britain's cinema screens.

  • Pathe News: Italy in Wales - Pathe News returns to Portmeirion in 1962, this time in Technicolor.

  • Leslie Gilliat Recce 35mm Transparencies - Producer Leslie Gilliat was assigned to The Prisoner in the early stages of the project and visited Portmeirion in 1966 to photograph the village. These 35mm transparencies are the results of that recce and present some initial ideas for the buildings' use in the series.

  • Film Trims - a selection of trims from Arrival, Many Happy Returns, The Chimes of Big Ben and The Girl Who Was Death.

  • Radio On - Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates was given a rare opportunity to interview Patrick McGoohan when he visited the NEC in Birmingham to be presented with a Caterham Super 7.

  • Patrick McGoohan 1983 - an outtake from one of Chris Rodley's full interview sessions with Patrick McGoohan for the original Six Into One – The Prisoner File documentary.

  • ITC Promo Reel - Discovered in 2006 in ITV's vaults, this showreel is an example of what Lew Grade would have shown to his US network clients in their preview theatres in pursuit of a sale. It hasn't been seen beyond its original use in 1967.

Notes

  • Network staged a 50th Anniversary event at Portmeirion on 29 September 2017 to tie in with this release. Cast and crew present included Seamus Byrne, Annette Andrι, Fenella Fielding, Jane Merrow, Derren Nesbitt, Norma West, Peter Wyngarde, as well as Catherine McGoohan, and the Big Finish team including writer Nicholas Briggs, 'the new Number 6' Mark Elstob and Nickolas Grace. Another of the day's highlights was the screening of two Prisoner episodes - Dance of the Dead and Checkmate - in the Hercules Hall, projected in 35mm.

  • As part of the ticket price for the event, attendees were given the opportunity to choose between receiving a Blu-ray or DVD version of the new 50th Anniversary 'Village Editions' Blu-ray or DVD + CD + book set. However, the copies handed out on the day were all missing Disc 6 (In My Mind), which was not fully cleared in time for the event. Corrected sets were sent out a short while later.

  • It is unclear whether Network made the DVD version available more widely after the Portmeirion event.

  • Catherine McGoohan 2017: Catherine McGoohan speaks candidly about her father's work and legacy

Notes

  • In My Mind was a feature length documentary made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Prisoner. It was written and directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Chris Rodley. The film recounts one of Rodley's early filmmaking experiences: an attempt to interview Patrick McGoohan for the 1983 Channel 4 documentary Six into One: The Prisoner File. The interview didn't go quite to plan, as In My Mind reveals.
